There is a particular kind of person whose autumn starts with the cat claiming the warmest spot in the house.
This is the black cat on its own, without the quilt square behind it. It sits in profile with its tail curled up, its body worked as patchwork rather than a silhouette: a small floral on one panel, gold gingham on another, plain rose on a third, every piece outlined in running stitch so the fabric reads as fabric. A gold maple leaf and a rose maple leaf are tucked in at its feet, both with stitched veins. Nothing is a solid blob of colour. Every shape has something drawn inside it.
Printed on a Comfort Colors garment-dyed hoodie. With no block behind the cat, the colour of the fleece is the background, so the art sits in the fabric instead of on top of it. On the darker colours the cat and leaves carry a narrow cream felt edge so the dark cat stays clear against the hoodie. Heavyweight ring-spun cotton blend fleece, pigment dyed so the colour softens rather than fades, a double-lined hood with matching drawcord, a front pouch pocket and ribbed cuffs, relaxed through the body, and it gets better every wash.
